It is estimated that by 2025, 75% of the people comprising the working populations would be millennials, people born from 1980 to 2000. And while they are born in a different generation, you would realize that millennials have their own set of thinking and beliefs. 

As an employer, your goal is to successfully manage millennials and make them assets of your company.

Here are tips on how you can deal with millennials in your organization:

Be a mentor, not a boss.

Millennials are quite notorious for their lack of respect and tolerance for traditional structures of authority. They were raised to be more lax and permissive, so they do not really adapt well to strict protocols or blatant displays of power. Rather, they prefer leaders that are more approachable, to motivate and encourage them.

Develop a firm company culture.

One thing about millennial employees is that they like to be in companies that have a strong culture and values which are similar with their own ideals and lifestyle. They have the constant need of validation that they are doing something worthwhile and that they are involved with a bigger cause than just earning. They are driven to be a part of something significant that affects their environment positively.

Encourage work-life balance.

You have to be aware that millennials are not designed to be workaholics. You do not expect them to be in the office after working hours as they always desire to go out. Millennial employees will demand flexibility and autonomy, so give them options and consider having flexible working arrangements.

It is not all about the money.

When you manage millennials in your company, understanding their motivation to work is necessary. And here’s the catch: for them, money is not everything. Their compensation packages are not the reasons why they keep working. They desire for learning and growth. If they cannot improve themselves while they are in your company, millennials would most likely file their resignation and leave. Give them avenues to learn new stuff and develop their skills as a working professional.
